Astronomical Ring - £69.99 The two rings open out to represent the equator and local meridian: the central bar represents the Earth's axis. When the ring is adjusted for latitude and date, it is then suspended and rotated until sunlight shining through the central hole strikes the time scale. When this happens the solar time can be read. Cappucino Quadrant - £39.99 The name is derived from the best known version of this SOLAR CLOCK, in which the path of the pearl in both tropics traces two lines that resemble the hood of Capuchin monks. The quadrant goes back to the 15th century, although the date is not precise. This model is a sea-going, local-hour quadrant of a type called a clinometer. Solid brass. 110mm x 80mm.

Saturn Coasters - £6.99 A set of five drink coasters show a false-colour image constructed from radio signals transmitted through Saturn’s ring system by the Cassini spacecraft and received back on Earth. Processing the data reveals information about the distribution of different sized particles in the rings, represented by the various colours.

Astrolabe Keyring - £26.99 The Astrolabe is an historical astronomical instrument used by classical astronomers. It was the chief navigational instrument until the invention of the compass and sextant. Its many uses included locating and predicting positions of the Sun, Moon, Planets and Stars, determining local time and longitude, surveying and triangulation. Even today the Astrolabe clearly demonstrates the celestial mechanism and apparent movement of the stars. Solid brass, 45mm diam, length with keyring - 125mm.

Nocturnal Keyring - £26.99 The Nocturnal is an instrument developed in the 16th century for determining time at night. It uses the Pole Star (Polaris) and either the ‘pointers’ of Ursa Major or the ‘guards’ of Ursa Minor. A hand held instrument, it was often made of wood and was widely used on board ships. It was only with the development of accurate mechanical clocks after about two hundred years that the Nocturnal became less important. This is a replica of an instrument dated 1570 and signed by Humphrey Cole, the original of which can be seen in the British Museum. Pizzaro Sundial - £24.99 This sundial is named after Francisco Pizarro, the 15th century Spanish Canquistador who defeated the Incas and claimed most of South America for Spain. He used the dial on his expeditions to Peru where he is remembered for founding the city of Lima. This is an attractive portable sundial and makes an interesting gift. 70mm x 45mm x 25mm.
